The History Museum of Carteret County (formerly The History Place) captures, preserves, and presents the mystery and history of Carteret County showcasing original textiles, photographs, military memorabilia, glassware, arts, clothing and furniture of the eras. The library displays more than 10,000 local books and publications, many of which can be purchased in the Gift Shop. The Museum hosts fun and educational seminars and musical events, year-round, and features a lecture series with local storytellers. The North Carolina Seafood Festival is one of the Top 20 Festivals in the Southeast, bringing over 200,000 people to waterfront Morehead City in the month of October for over 30 years !! Morehead City Primary School is located at 4409 Country Club Road. Serving Kindergarten through Third Grade with a student count of 600 and an average of 12 students per teacher.
Morehead City Elementary School at Camp Glenn serves Fourth & Fifth Grades and is located at 3316 Arendell Street. Operating at Above Average in State test scores, MHC Elementary educates 270 students with an average of 12 students per teacher.
Morehead City Middle School serves Sixth through Eighth Grades and is located at 400 Barbour Road. MHC Middle School has 494 students and ranks Above Average in State test scores with an average of 13 students per teacher.
West Carteret High School is situated at 4700 Country Club Road and was built as a consolidating secondary school for Newport & Morehead City in 1964, serving grades Ninth through Twelfth with 1,260 students and an average of 15 students per teacher. West Carteret is the largest High School in Carteret County and has been recognized by the State of North Carolina as an Honor School of Excellence with at least 90% of students performing at grade level.
We are fortunate to have a local community college in Morehead City providing both live and online classes. Carteret Community College is located at 3505 Arendell Street and offers High School students the opportunity to graduate with college credits through the Career & College Promise Program, tuition FREE. This Dual Enrollment provides our youth the path to accelerate their education with college certificates, diplomas, associates degrees, and college transfer opportunities while living at or close to home and without the heavy expense of student loans. There are over 40 different programs of study offered at the community college and over 12 branches of continuing education, life enrichment classes, and a small business center on site in support of local entrepreneurs and start-ups.
